Description

In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

History

Early Development
FTL was the first project developed by Subset Games. The game gained early recognition at the China Independent Games Festival as a finalist in 2011, just six months into its development. It was at this point that Subset Games started working with Ben Prunty, who was responsible for the sound design and soundtrack for FTL. He would go on to win multiple awards for his work on the game.

Kickstarter
In March 2012, FTL launched its Kickstarter looking for $10,000 to finish development. It gained over 200% of that goal, becoming one of the earliest big video game Kickstarter success stories. It went on to release on September 14th, 2012.

Advanced Edition
After finding commercial and critical success with the initial release, Subset Games returned to FTL to create a free expansion along with an iPad port. FTL: Advanced Edition was released in April 2014, and marked the end of FTL’s development.

Features

  • Real-time strategic combat where the player controls both the ship’s systems and its crew.
  • Thousands of text events flesh out the narrative and universe that the player explores.
  • Procedural generation, permadeath, and other 'roguelike' elements make the game endlessly replayable.

"The Opposite of Fail: The Story of FTL" - Polygon
In many ways the Kickstarter campaign should have failed. Its developers were unknown. The game had no existing fanbase. It didn't have fancy graphics or promise a product so enormous that players would need to hook car engines to their computers to make it work. The developers didn't set out to make a commercial product backed by tens of thousands of people. The Kickstarter campaign did the opposite of fail. It was just the beginning of FTL [...] http:.

"Behind the Sounds: Hotline Miami and FTL" - Rock Paper Shotgun
Music man David Valjalo follows-up his exploration of the big-budget orchestral soundtracks in the mainstream games industry with a look at the other end of the scale – the super-low-budget, ultra-catchy, sometimes kitschy scores of indie darlings. He rounds up the men behind Hotline Miami, Sweden-based Dennis Wedin and Jonatan Soderstrom, two of the soundtrack artists they hand-picked, US artists M.O.O.N. and Scattle, and FTL composer Ben Prunty, to get the scoop on making music for small games and, quite often, small change. https:.

"Road to the IGF: Subset Games’ FTL" - Gamasutra
Subset Games seems to have came out of nowhere, but its success has been long coming, and hard won. http:.
